Explore Like a Local: Summer Road Trip To the North Okanagan

I’ll be honest: it was the snow that first drew me to the North Okanagan – and Silver Star’s deep, consistent, all-natural snow has never disappointed. But now, after seven years of living here, I’ve fallen just as hard for the summer. Reliable sunshine, orchards brimming with fruit, endless outdoor activities, and cool lakes to dive into afterward. Plus, top-notch local food and drink. It’s the kind of place that keeps calling me back.

If you’re planning a visit, summer is the perfect time to soak up the North Okanagan. I’ve put together a five-day itinerary to help you make the most of it. Whether you’re into adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, let me show you some of my favourite places to go.

DAY 1: ENDERBY & ARMSTRONG

If I had five days to explore, I’d start in Enderby. It’s as cute as it sounds: a little town nestled in the valley, guarded by the impressive Enderby Cliffs. The Cliffs are one of my favourite summer hikes, especially in the early season, when many other trails in the region are still buried under snow. It’s a solid four-to-five-hour-hour trek, so not for the faint of heart, but the panoramic views from the top are well worth the push. Alternatively, the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre takes you on a scenic stroll along the Shuswap River, leading through a 10-acre “living classroom” under a cedar-hemlock forest.

Another option is to venture down the road to the Township of Spallumcheen, where the Thomas Hayes Ecological Reserve has plenty of choices for shorter walks. As you wander the peaceful trails, keep an eye out for local birds and wildlife. It’s also a great place to spot native flora, such as the colourful clematis, chocolate lilies, and heartleaf arnicas.

Treat hungry stomachs to a sweet treat at the Wild Oak Cafe and then spend the afternoon exploring more of the City of Armstrong. It looks small, but you’ll find there’s plenty to see if you know where to look. Check out the Barn Quilt Trail, a self-guided tour of barns, businesses, and community landmarks with decorative painted quilt blocks on them, blending traditions of quilting and farming. Or, browse the community Museum and Art Gallery to explore more of the area’s history. For dinner, visit Farmstrong, a farm-to-table, family-run cidery with handcrafted ciders and a great atmosphere.

Where to Stay: Spend the night under the stars at Cedar Grove, a lush glamping experience in the heart of the forest, or visit Blue Grass Farm for quiet mornings in a rustic guesthouse.

DAYS 2-3: VERNON & SPARKLING HILL

Carry on your journey down the road to the Vernon, the the largest community in the North Okanagan. Here, endless outdoor adventures await at the edges of town. Paddle, cycle, or swim around one of the lakes. I like renting an e-bike, packing a lunch, and cruising down the Okanagan Rail Trail. You’ll find plenty of hidden swim spots along this easy-graded path, and the views of Kalamalka Lake are postcard-worthy.

I can’t talk about the North Okanagan without mentioning the wine. Spending a summer afternoon touring the Scenic Sip Wine Trail in Lake Country, or relaxing at The Perch Winery in Vernon with a glass of the region’s best, really is my idea of heaven.

If golf’s your thing, Vernon is home to some spectacular courses. Tee up at Predator Ridge Resort or The Rise Resort, and follow it up with some food on-site. Other great restaurants are Masiero Pizzeria for excellent wood-fired pizza, and newly opened BNA Brewing is quickly becoming a favourite too.

Where to Stay: Rest weary heads at Prestige Vernon Lodge, an established gem with a heated pool, a brand-new games room, and dining that makes relaxing easy. It’s a comfortable, convenient base right in the heart of Vernon. Alternatively, Sparkling Hill Resort offers stunning views, elegant rooms, and a world-class spa. Enjoy a soak in the infinity pool or unwind in one of the many steam and sauna rooms before heading off to our final stop – and trust me, you’ll want to be well-rested for what’s next.

DAYS 4-5: SILVER STAR

Finally, Silver Star. It’s hard to know where to begin. I wish I could put into words what it feels like to walk through fields of wildflowers on a late summer evening, with nothing but the breeze – and maybe the cry of a red-tailed hawk – for company. Or how it feels to tear down a trail at SilverStar Bike Park, flying through berms until the lifts stop running, then heading straight to the patio of the Red Antler for a cold drink. It’s a heady mix of peace and adrenaline, and there’s nothing quite like it.

Grab a bite at one of the restaurants open during the summer months. If I had to choose, The Bulldog is my go-to for a plate of flavourful Dutch-Indonesian fare, best enjoyed out on the patio in the sunshine.

For a bit of added fun, plan your trip around one of the many events this summer. Weekends like the Bombshell Enduro, Crankworx, and the Silver Star Beer & Cider Fest are going to be lively, and the Silver Star Music Series is on every Saturday, so you can sit back and relax, enjoying free live performances from some incredible Canadian artists.

Where to Stay: Make your base at one of the many vacation rentals in and around the Village – plenty offer scenic views and private hot tubs for the ideal getaway. Prefer to be right in the heart of the action? Book a room in one of the newly renovated suites at Vance Creek to be just steps away from the Village.

Maybe I’m biased, but I think the North Okanagan has everything you could want in a summer getaway. From peaceful hikes in the hills of Enderby to adrenaline-filled rides at SilverStar Bike Park, this itinerary only scratches the surface of what’s on offer in the warmer months. Check out even more summer activities, events, and local tips, or better yet: start planning your own North Okanagan getaway.

Honestly, I might even like it more than winter now… just don’t tell anyone I said that.
